When Jesus says that we have to be born of water as well as the Spirit to inherit eternal life, he may be telling Nicodemus and us that we must take our natural birth in water as seriously as we take our spiritual rebirth.
Again, isn’t that the point of the incarnation? Isn’t that God’s way of taking the natural world as seriously as the spiritual world? I think it is. Water is the material source of God’s good creation – even science tells us that life on earth came from water – and you can’t be born again and leave that goodness
behind.
The point of being born again is to help God restore that original goodness to all of creation, real creation, natural creation, beginning with us. Our being born again is to help creation be born again.
